As a very large school of about 820 students, making changes to classes has impacts on many students, teachers, and timetables. This is why we will not be accommodating any class change requests. Parents can support their children by reassuring them that they will make friends and will have a fun year.
Class list creation is not a task taken lightly at Samuel W. Shaw. Professionals (teachers, EAs, administration) who have worked with students have engaged in multiple discussions to determine the best possible class placements.
We kindly request our families trust and respect the professional judgement of our staff. Placement considerations include multiple factors. Each class consists of a heterogeneous mix of students. The achievement and ability level, as well as the independent work habits of each student have been reviewed. The following is a list of all of the moving parts that hold high levels of value when making class lists:
- Classrooms are balanced in terms of numbers of children with special learning needs, social/emotional complexities, and English Language Learners
- Learning styles of students are considered
- Chemistry of the classroom dynamics
- Historical factors such as previous class dynamics, relationships, and interactions
- Good working relationships are reviewed
- Friendship requests will not be considered. Students are given many opportunities to engage with their peers from other classes in phys-ed, complementary classes, lunch, intramurals, etc. Remember: building new relationships with others is a great learning opportunity for students.
Please understand that these are important decisions that need to be made by the educators in our school. Through clear communication with staff that worked with students, SWS staff are aware of unique circumstances. Through personalization of learning and our focus on making connections with our students, staff have a thorough understanding of how to create successful learning environments for all students. Class placements will reflect our sincere effort to create balanced classrooms where each child is valued, challenged and successful.
