Sam Shaw – Parent Message
August 27th, 2023
Greetings to our Shaw community and families. We trust this finds you well as we find the end of summer near and the start of another school year. We had some staff in last week getting prepared for this week as we welcome our full staff back in tomorrow morning. We have a full 3 days of preparation as we get ready for students to arrive this coming Thursday. As previously communicated we have many changes coming our way this year and with it will bring us the opportunity to start the year filled with excitement in what we have envisioned for a great school year for our students.
I have had a few requests from parents about homerooms and teachers for the coming year. We have had in excess of 50 student changes that will require immediate attention as our front office staff is back. These changes include many students transferring into Sam Shaw that will require our attention as we continue to finalize our schedules and classroom assignments. Homeroom teachers will be making contact with parents in the days leading up to Thursday to introduce themselves. Teachers will attempt phone calls first and if not successful in making contact they will certainly then send an email with the introduction.
The plan for Thursday is for our grade 5/6 students to make their way to the main gym where they will connect with their homeroom teacher. Our students in grades 7, 8, 9 will be making their way straight to their homeroom. The day will start at 9:10 for all of our students, with the doors opening up by 8:30am to help students transition in. Our day will end at our normal time at 3:40. Friday will be our normal Friday schedule with a 9:10 start and a 1:20 end time.
Students will be spending the first two days getting organized, getting their schedules and beginning the year in good ways as we try and set them up in good ways. We will start our full class schedule the following Tuesday after the long weekend. We will spend time on Friday going through the Tuesday schedule to help students know where they need to go.
We know that as we start the school year there may be moments that don't always go as planned. There will be lots of visible support for students and many adults to help students start out the year in successful ways. If your child has any questions or concerns, we would ask them to start the process of getting used to connecting with their homeroom teacher as a key contact to seek help.
Shannon and I look forward to seeing the students on Thursday.
Have a great week.
