Sam Shaw – Parent Message

September 10th, 2023

Good evening to our Sam Shaw parents.  We hope this finds you well at the end of the weekend.  We had a very good week last week with students going through the rotation of classes and having an opportunity to start the process of establishing good routines for the year.  We know it will take time for some of these changes to take hold, we know as well that once they do it will contribute to a learning environment that will help support the learning of all.

Our grade 9's participated n the first field trip of the year as they went off – site to establish their sense of community and reinforce the leadership in learning we are looking for from our grade 9's this year.  We heard it was a great day and will ensure we have more chicken fingers ready next timeJ.  Thanks to our parent volunteers that helped out and supported the trip.

We also hosted our first pep rally of the year and connected a pancake breakfast to this day on Friday.  Our students were outstanding in connection to both events.  We are taking intentional steps this year to have our students connect with the school in good ways as we know if they are part of the community and feel a sense of belonging learning will be impacted positively.  We will look to have these types of days and events more frequently though the year.

As indicated below we will be hosting our townhalls this week.  It will be a great opportunity for parents to come in and hear from administration and the Learning Leaders at the school.  A positive relationship that has effective communication and common understanding is what we are striving for through this opportunity.  We are looking forward to seeing parents through the week.  On Thursday after the Grade 8 townhall we will be having our first Parent Council meeting.  If you are interested in supporting the school by contributing at this council meeting please plan on attending.  They are a great source of ideating for Shannon and I as we look to lead the school.

This coming Friday our curriculum teams will be coming together to begin looking at last year's data and making decisions for the most important aspects of learning for the upcoming year.  Our system has asked us to look at assessment as a key focus across all areas this coming year.  This is an area of strength in Shannon and my experience as leaders and we are looking forward to helping establish that as a strength within the school.  More to come on this throughout the year.

We hope you have a fabulous Sunday night and look forward to seeing many of you thoughout the week.

Terry / Shannon
