Coming Prepared for Class
The Samuel W. Shaw Physical Education Department welcomes all our students back for another exciting year of physical education and athletics. We would like to share some information with you about this school year.
Expectations
Wearing proper clothing and footwear helps students be prepared to participate fully and safely during Physical Education classes. This year, we are opening the changerooms to facilitate the opportunity for students to change into clothing, appropriate for movement.
Clothing
All students are asked to change into, or wear athletic tops and bottoms that they can move in. Children who choose to wear dresses, skirts, and jeans may want to consider changing into clothing such as leggings, sweats, or shorts which allow for greater ease of movement. Each student in grades 6-9 will receive a lock and locker in the changerooms for their belongings, so these are secured during Physical Education class. Time will be provided at the start and end of Phys Ed. classes for students to prepare for physical activity then change back into their non-athletic clothing after; (Grade 5 and PLP will not be required to change, and are asked to wear clothing and shoes appropriate for Physical Education class). “Storm” shirts are also available for purchase for $10 from your child’s Phys. Ed. teacher (this is optional).
Footwear
Athletic shoes that lace up, provide support and are non-marking are requested. Crocs, boots and sandals pose safety concerns for the student and others and are not permitted. Students will be reminded of the need for appropriate footwear and be asked to bring in and wear this footwear for Phys Ed class.
Phys. Ed occurs in and outside all year long. Please ensure your child is prepared to go outside for Phys. Ed. year-round.
We want to support each student in being successful and participating in Phys. Ed activities. Support to access proper footwear is available to families who may need this. If this would be of benefit to your family, please contact Ms. Brocklebank @ rlbrocklebank@cbe.ab.ca directly.
Students who may need an alternate space to change will be provided with this; please speak to your child’s Phys. Ed. teacher to arrange.
Athletics
We have 3 sports starting up right away: soccer, cross country, and basketball. Please see attached tryout/practice schedules for soccer and cross country. Basketball season starts Sept. 9th and information will be forwarded next week. Grade 6-9 are eligible to try-out for athletics. Please ensure you have filled out the Annual Authorization for Athletic Try-Out Form before your child begins. It has been attached or they can come get it from the PE Team.
Medical Concerns
Students are expected to participate according to their capabilities. If a student is unable to participate or, if an activity is to be restricted due to injury, a note from parents is expected. If, for medical reasons, a student is unable to participate for
an extended period, a note from a doctor is required. Alternate activities and/or assignments are to be expected for students who are unable to participate fully.
Cell Phones / Handheld Devices
Cell phones or handheld devices will not be allowed in the gym or other learning areas during PE class. This also includes outside activities. If students do not follow these expectations, consequences will follow from our Digital Citizenship Agreement.
