Happy Sunday, Samuel W. Shaw Families,

Indigenous Education at Samuel W. Shaw

Students in grade 6 learned of the sacredness of circles.  They discussed some examples (seasons, sun/moo/earth, water cycles, animal cycles, etc.) and then went outside and looked for 4 examples of circles or cycles.  The students drew a quick sketch and then explained how it was important to the natural world and how it can impact us as humans.  Then they started studying the medicine wheel.  It is a circle, and the meanings of each quadrant also have cyclical properties.  Students learned how each quadrant represents an animal, a stage of life, a season, a sacred plant, a type of health, a color and an element.

The students described their work this way: Students in 6-3 used watercolor pencils to create a visual representation of their understanding of the Medicine Wheel.  Students found that they enjoyed showing their understanding in pictures rather than words.  They enjoyed painting and exploring their artistic side.

Smudge with Ms. Kerry

Semester 2 Complementary Course Changes

There will be no changes made to students’ semester 2 timetables. We have made every effort to place students in their preferred option courses; however, due to space limitations, not all students will receive their top choices. Our complementary team has carefully and thoughtfully worked through this process to create balanced class lists. While we understand that some students may be disappointed, all our complementary courses offer valuable learning experiences.

At the end of last year, students ranked their option choices, and this information guided our course placements. Please note that not all option courses are available during every time block, which may have impacted scheduling.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to provide the best learning opportunities for all students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Cold Weather

Well, so much for the plus temperatures! We have most certainly plunged into the frigidity of Calgary winter, and to say that some middle schoolers aren’t always the best at dressing for the weather is a bit of an understatement. We also know there are many families for whom the choice of a warm coat is more of a struggle. We acknowledge that warm winter coats in some cases are a luxury some families cannot afford. If it would benefit your family to receive a coat from the school, please connect with Student Services, and we can help.

Sam Shaw Storm Classic- Jr. Volleyball Tournament

Thank you to the many families who have reached out in support of this incredible event! We received many donations of time and items so we can make this the best jr. volleyball tournament to date! We look forward to seeing fans and players this upcoming weekend! 2PM start on both Friday and Saturday. All student-fans must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Racist Language Use Awareness for Parents & Guardians

At Samuel W. Shaw School, we are actively working to address the recent rise in racist language use among middle school students, online, in person, and through washroom graffiti, by fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and accountability. Through classroom discussions, school-wide initiatives, and clear expectations, we are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students. However, meaningful change requires a partnership between school and home. We encourage parents to have open conversations with their children about racism, using resources such as this: talking about racism guide and the CBE CARES initiative. By working together, we can help our students develop empathy, critical thinking, and the ability to stand up against discrimination, ensuring our school remains a place where every student feels valued and respected.
