Hello Storm Families!

The purpose of our parent/guardian weekly messages is to provide important and useful information for the coming week. Another source of information is our school website. The weekly emails will also be posted on the website for easy access and reference.

Information about classroom learning will be shared consistently by teachers and grade teams. Information about what your child is learning will be emailed and posted on their Google Classroom.  Examples include special projects, assignments, resources, as well as Truth and Reconciliation, Diversity and Inclusion.  It is important that parents/guardians are aware of the learning that is happening in classrooms, shared specifically by your child’s teachers. It is a parent’s responsibility to check PowerSchool for attendance and learning progress. Marks will be updated regularly by teachers.  If you have questions about your child’s progress or graded curriculum, please contact your child’s teacher(s).

Separate and regular emails will be sent by the administration with intentional information about school wide events, celebrations, and calendar acknowledgements.  This will include, but is not limited to, specific information about how SWS will participate and acknowledge Orange Shirt Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Black History month, Ramadan, Eid, Pride month, Halloween, Christmas, Spirit Days...only to name a few. Our work is grounded in the Alberta Curriculum, Alberta Legislations, as well as the Calgary Board of Education’s frameworks, mission, and values. If you have any questions, please reach out to any of our school staff.

Our school council and fundraising society will be sharing bi-monthly updates by email. These emails will provide clear information about fundraising efforts, school council meetings, and vacancies on the council.

Our goal is to ensure that parents/guardians have access to information in a timely manner with clear and consistent communication from the school.  This is a transparent and multi-layered approach to sharing what is happening in our building. Thank you for taking the time to read the important emails that you will receive.

Important Information: (this week is long as there is a lot of information to share)

Please watch for an email from CBE containing forms and documents (such as demographic forms, consent to post and publish, health forms etc.).  It is each parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide the school with completed documentation each year.  This information is important so the school can access current contact information, address, etc.

Please note: the school can only accept registrations for students that live within the designated area. Our enrolment is rapidly growing, meaning that we can only provide resources for our designated students. Please update your demographic forms with your current address.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT EDUCATION AMENDMENT ACT, 2024: The Education Amendment Act includes NEW requirements for schools and school authorities in effect September 1, 2025:

  • Parent/Guardian OPT-IN for human sexuality learning activities
  • Notification and consent for a student that requests school staff to use a gender-identity related preferred name or pronoun
  • Fairness in Sport for female only sports teams (ages 12-18)

***SWS will share specific information about try-outs and athletics in the coming days.

NEW AB MINISTERIAL ORDER for Standards for Selection, Availability, and Access of School Library Material

  • SWS is working closely with CBE and AB Gov. Guidelines to ensure we are in compliance with the new Ministerial Order.
  • For the month of September, we will continue to share information about how this will directly impact our school. We will be taking a closer look at the materials in our library/classrooms and make decisions based on the information provided by the Alberta Government and the Calgary Board of Education. Thank you for your patience while we work hard to learn more about the these amendments and ministerial orders and how this will affect Samuel W. Shaw School.

We hope everyone has a wonderful first week of school!
