Diversity & Inclusion

February is Black History Month, a time when schools across the Calgary Board of Education recognize and honour the histories, experiences, and contributions of Black Canadians and Black communities around the world.

At our school, Black History Month is an opportunity to support students in developing a deeper understanding of identity, belonging, and social responsibility. Learning throughout the month will highlight the voices, achievements, and perspectives of Black individuals past and present, while also encouraging thoughtful conversations about equity, resilience, and community.

Staff may engage students in a variety of age-appropriate ways, including classroom discussions, read-alouds, curriculum connections, multimedia resources, and reflection activities. These experiences are designed to build awareness, challenge stereotypes, and help students understand why recognizing Black history is important—not only in February, but throughout the year.

Families are encouraged to continue these conversations at home in ways that feel meaningful to you. Exploring books, media, or community events together can help extend learning and foster empathy and understanding.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create inclusive learning environments where all students feel seen, valued, and respected.

Please connect with your child’s homeroom teacher if you have any questions.

Important Information:

  1. Ask your child about Olympic Door decorating! What country will their homeroom be representing?
  2. Please check MyCBE to pay your fees for option courses, teams, fieldtrips and noon supervision for grades 5 & 6. The school relies on these fees to cover the cost of field trip buses, programs, materials and supplies for option courses.
  3. Is your child missing a coat? Hoodie? Random boot? Pencil case? Please ask them to check the lost and found. There are many items that look sad, lonely, a bit dirty and they need to go home.
