Dear SWS Families,

Teachers and administration have unfortunately noticed an increase in the use of racial slurs among some of our students. In a few instances, this language has appeared in conversations and in vandalism. This is deeply concerning.

Let me be clear: racism and the use of racial slurs are not tolerated at Samuel W. Shaw School. They are harmful, dehumanizing, and create an unsafe environment for students and staff.

As we highlight Black History Month and celebrate the contributions, strength, and leadership of Black communities, grade teams will be addressing this directly in homeroom on Friday. These conversations will focus on helping students understand the history and impact of racial slurs, why this language is harmful, and the responsibility we all share in building a respectful and inclusive school culture.

The Calgary Board of Education has a zero-tolerance stance on racism. Incidents involving racial slurs will be addressed seriously and may result in disciplinary consequences in accordance with CBE Progressive Discipline policy.

We ask that you also speak with your child at home. Many students are exposed to inappropriate language through music, social media, gaming platforms, and group chats without fully understanding the meaning or harm behind the words. Reinforcing at home that racial slurs are unacceptable — even when repeated from media — is essential.

At SWS, our school-wide focus this year is belonging. True belonging cannot exist where racism is present. We are committed to ensuring every student feels safe, valued, and respected.

Thank you for your partnership in this important work.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kivi
